Wedging a Sequoia through a Redwood, Harry Potter’s Themed Campground, and Hiking Eel River!
We are on a 7,000 mile Great American Road trip. You can catch up on our last post: San Francisco, California & Muir Woods – Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, Worlds Tallest Trees and Volunteering at a Makerfarm! here.
Heading North from San Francisco we hit the Redwood highway. Driving along the 101, this drive is on par in beauty to the coastal route. The old and new growth Redwood trees give it character, as it cuts through mountain passes and along valley streams.
We headed through Humbolt county, “America’s Cannabis Heartland”. Home to the largest Redwood trees in the world and of course Bigfoot!
Avenue of the Giants
Avenue of the Giants is the scenic route along 101. Along it you can drive through a Redwood Tree, Visit Founders Grove, See Grandfather Tree, Experience the Mystery Tree, ride the train at Confusion Hill, the list continues.
Drive Through Tree
The Drive Through Tree or “Chandelier Tree” is located near Leggett, California. For only $15 you can attempt to wedge your vehicle through a very large tree or damage it in the process. During our attempt, a guy on a motorcycle tried to come up to us and politely tell us that we would not fit, but I am taking no such advice.
After several careful maneuvers with a long line of patient would be attempters behind us… we just aren’t able to squeeze it through. Given we are 4,500 miles from home and needed our car to return, it is time to move on.
Redwoods River Resort and Pub
The Redwood River Resort and Pub had great amenities. Complete with a pool, bar games, kids playground, a pub with Russian River Brewing beer on tap and a five star River hike directly from the property, this place had it all. You can literally, party with bigfoot.
We stayed just 1 night. The kids met friends, we met some friends, everyone had a great time.
During July 4th weekend the Campground hosts a “Harry Potter” themed event. Quite a cool experience for the kids.
Eel River Hike
Directly from the campsite, you can hike a short 350 yards of ~30-40% grade to the Eel River. Once at the river’s level, the views are astounding.
This may seem like a short hike, but when you need to carry a 3 year old on your back the whole way back, it’s like a visiting Nature’s Gym.
Having such a great time among the Redwoods in the Avenue of the Giants , we simply wish we had more time to check out this cool area. Alas, our journey continues North towards Crescent City California!
