Wrangling Cattle at the Grant Kohrs Cattle Ranch and Discovering the petrified wood of Ginkgo Petrified State forest!
We are on a 7,000 mile Great American Road trip. You can catch up on our last post: Issaquah & Seattle Washington – Madison’s Broken Arm, Warming the Soul with Old Friends and Parke Diem Electronic Music Festival! here.
The trail west towards Yellowstone from Issaquah covers mountain passes, desert valleys, agricultural land and open plains. All on interstate 90. We split the trip into 2 days staying overnight in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Bozeman, Montana.
The main points of interest along the way are:
- Ginkgo Petrified Forest in Washington
- Camp Coeur d’Alene Idaho
- Grant Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Montana
Ginkgo Petrified Forest in Washington
Millions of years ago a volcano erupted near Washington and entombed an ancient forest of trees. Over the years the trees became mineralized, and the Columbia River slowly wore away the surrounding rock. Now the fossilized wood is on display at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park.
Camp Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho is a summer destination for many travelers. If you need only to drop in for one night and you are in close proximity to the 90, there is no better stop than Camp Coeur d’Alene. Here we encounter visitors staying for up to a week to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
This Campground is equipped with everything the overnight camper needs. Free firewood, dishwashing stations, hot showers and full hookups.
Grant Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, Montana
On our way through Montana near Deer Lodge, we stopped at the Grant-Kohrs National Historic Site. This unique National Park is an ode to the early western life of Montana. This Ranch is a living Western Movie. It has live cattle, horse carriage rides, old Victorian homes, and an open and functional cattle grazing range.
Bozeman Trail Campground, Montana
Our portal to Yellowstone, is the Bozeman Trail Campground. Here is a sleepy little campground neighboring the highway in Bozeman Montana.
From here we make the 3 hour drive to Yellowstone National Park for the next adventure!
